The Return of American Jesus

.

Mark Millar has proven himself to be a rather eccentric comic creator. This week he announced the surprise release of the sequel to his American Jesus comic book series. Millar announced last January the shooting dates and location for the Netflix adaptation of American Jesus – Mexico and late 2019. The series is also being pushed as a multilingual series. American Jesus was first published by Dark Horse Comics in 2004 as Chosen featuring artwork by Peter Gross. This series was later collected in a trade paperback printed by Image Comics with the new American Jesus title.

After reading the first issue of the new series released this week I was left rather confused as to where it fit into the original storyline. This new issue doesn’t appear to be a sequel to the original American Jesus series, first published by Dark Horse Comics in 2004, but rather a new series using the same concept of the original comic.

This new series takes place in 1970’s New York and features a young couple and a virgin pregnancy – where as the first volume of the series took place in present day 2004 and featured a 12 year old who based on the 2004 timeline couldn’t possibly be the result of the virgin birth in this new story. This means that the this new issue and volume features the first appearance of many all new characters. Since the the Netflix series is being filmed in Mexico and being pushed as a multilingual series it seems more likely that this new series is what the show will be based on. While the previous series was only three issues the entire book took place in the United States and there all of the characters spoke English. Based on all of this I think its well worth grabbing copies of the first issue of this new series.

This first issue of the new series, American Jesus The New Messiah has four covers including two different variations of the same Frank Quietely cover as well as a blank variant cover
