Santa Claus – One of the most powerful mutants in the Marvel Universe?

.
Its that time of year again when holiday posts become all of the rage. Keeping that in mind I thought it would be a great time to explore the most powerful mutant in the Marvel 616 universe up to 1991, Kris Kringle – also known as Santa Claus.
.

While Santa Claus first appears in the marvel universe in Strange Tales #34 from 1955 he isn’t acknowledge as the most powerful mutant until The Marvel Holiday Special #1 published in 1991.

The Marvel Holiday Special is an anthology featuring stories that take place within the Marvel 616 continuity. The first story is titled “X-Men in Miracle a few blocks down from 32nd Street” and it is written by Scott Lodbell featuring artwork by Dave Cockrum and Joe Rubinstein. In this story the X-Men’s Cerebro (the teams mutant detector) goes off announcing that is has identified and tracked down “the most powerful mutant (it had) ever registered”. The X-Men then go on an adventure to located this mutant to find out if its “a friend or foe”.

While the X-Men go to search for this new mutant they found out they weren’t alone, running into Banshee and “The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants” who were also pursuing this new mutant. After a quick battle Santa Claus turns Banshee and his friends into action figures. He then introduces himself to the X-Men identifying himself as the person they are searching for.

And that is how Santa Claus, Kris Kringle, became the most powerful mutant (ever discovered until 1991) within the Marvel 616 Universe.
