Warner Brothers has meeting with Michael B Jordan about Superman

.

Variety put out an article earlier today where they verified that Warner Brothers had sat down for a meeting with Michael B Jordan to pitch a new superman film. Something that had been rumored to be in the works for several months.

.
“There have been discussions with J.J. Abrams, whose company Bad Robot recently signed a massive first-look deal with the studio, and there was a meeting with Michael B. Jordan earlier this year with the “Creed” star pitching Warners on a vision for the character. However, Jordan isn’t ready to commit to taking on the project since filming doesn’t seem likely to happen for several years and he has a full dance card of projects. Insiders think that a new Superman film is unlikely to hit screens before 2023, given that there’s no script and no director attached.”

.
If Warner Brothers green lit a Michael B. Jordan Superman film for a 2023 release that would still allow Henry Cavil to appear one last time as Superman in the New Black Adam film – something that The Rock seems to be heavily pushing for on social media.
.
Superman films have always portrayed Superman as Clark Kent – but there are several other Superman characters that have been introduced in the DC Universe that would fit well for Michael B. Jordan.
.
When Superman died in the 1990’s DC introduced the first African American Superman – John Henry Irons also known as Steel. Steel was Superman for a brief amount of time before DC brought Superman back from the dead. If DC wanted to follow the Death of Superman story line it would make sense for them to use this character. Steel first appears in the DC universe in The Adventures of Superman #500. There are a few covers for this book – I like picking up copies of the Platinum Variant cover whenever I can find them priced reasonably. Since there haven’t been a lot of Steel comic books released in recent memory and keeping in mind DC and Warner Brothers already made a Steel film that bombed on release, I don’t think this is the character DC is going to be using.

There are two characters that I think would fit well on the big screen for Michael B Jordan – Val Zod and Calvin Ellis.
.
Calvin Ellis is a superman character that was modeled after former President Barack Obama. Calvin Ellis is Superman by night and the sitting president by day. While this character was first introduced in Final Crisis #7 from 2009, he made a very heavy appearance in the Grant Morrison Multiverse series.

Of the three characters listed I personally lean more towards Val Zod. Val Zod is the Superman of Earth 2. For Val Zod he has a similar origin story that we all should be familiar with. Moments before Krypton’s destruction four children escape to Earth, including, Val Zod, Kara, Kal-El (Clark Kent) and another child. It would be very easy for DC to bring this character to screen because the subject matter wouldn’t be all that foreign to audiences. Val Zod first appears in Earth 2 #19 from 2014 – there were two covers for this book, a regular cover and a one in twenty five Scribblenauts variant cover.

What do you think? Is this movie never going to be made? Or is there another character you think might fit into this narrative? Let me know in the comments or on social media!

  • Are you aware that earlier in the year he was talking about this same subject and actually stated interest in playing Calvin Ellis?

  • I have no issues going with a different Superman but it’s really just more of the same. He’s to powerful and I’d only be interested in a Superman movie if they did an Injustice type of story where He’s turned evil.
