Week in Review: August 14
Welcome to the Week in Review – where we look at the books being released every week and highlight which ones have potential to heat up online.
A book that isn’t selling well but I think you should be thinking about is Captain Marvel #9. While this book hasn’t been selling above its cover price, a lot of copies have been moving online. Captain Marvel #8 introduced us to the new villain Star but for some reason Marvel solicited Captain Marvel #9 as the first full appearance of this character even though she first appears in Captain Marvel #8 in multiple pages. Based on marvel pushing this issue I think it’s something to be looking into and thinking about this week.
This week is a light week for new releases but there are still a few books being released that are selling well online, although it seems like this weeks will be focused around recalled DC comic books. Earlier this week DC comics put out a notice to retailers through Diamond instructing them to destroy copies of this week’s Superman #14 and Supergirl #33. The notice states “The covers of both issues ultimately did not reflect the contents of the stores. Replacement copies with new covers will be provided at no cost to retailers.” The new covers no longer have the “Year of the VIllain tag-line” replacing it with “The Final Fate”. Both of these books have cover B variant covers so there are four books in total being recalled. As with most recalls – there is no accountability with the destruction of copies so while most retailers won’t sell copies online or on their official online marketplaces – most stores will sell copies if you ask them. Since these books are being released by one of the big two publishers – there will a long shelf life for these books, especially with high grade and graded 9.8 copies. Copies of these books are currently selling for $20 to $30 each.

One book that comes out this week that has been selling well online is the first issue of Boom Studios new mini-series, Once and Future. Once and Future is written by Kieron Gillen (Die, Wicked and Divine) and features artwork by Dan Mora (Klaus, Hexed). The first printing of the first issue is long sold out at the retailer level, as has the second printing and Boom Studios has already solicited a third printing of the first issue. Subsequently first print issues have been selling for $10+ online, there are also several store variants. Like Image Comics did with Spawn a few months ago, Boom studios is sending retailers a one-per store “thank you” variant cover – Copies of this variant have been selling for $80 on ebay. There is also a SDCC ashcan preview variant that has been selling for $60 to $80 online.

One last book I want to talk about is last week’s House of X #2 – this book has a few covers, all of the non-ratio variants seem to be selling for $10 to $15. This book is the second book in Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men take over and seems to be gaining steam online – if you can find copies in the wild for cover price this is a book you want to be picking up.
