Parts of this post originally appeared in the Comic Book Scalping video series, “This week in Speculation.” Excerpts from this article originally appeared in episode 3. This video and more can be found on our youtube channel. This was first pointed out by Topher S.
Harley Quinn first appeared in the Batman: The Animated Series, episode 22, The Jokers Flavor, first airing on September 11 1992. Harley Quinn didn’t hit comic book pages until a year later in September of 1993 in Batman Adventures #12 – but this isn’t the first published appearance of the character.
A magazine that has started to garner a lot of attention is Comics Scene issue 31. This magazine features a very early image of Harley Quinn in an article featuring an interview with Harley Quinn creator and writer for the Batman the Animated series, Paul Dini.
There is also a Golden Books, Read Along tape and Batman book set – that features Harley Quinn – this book doesn’t have a publishing date but it was released at some point in 1993.
Comics Scene #31 was published in February of 1993. Since its discovery Comics Scene #31 has sold very well online with current sales between hitting $20 to $60. With a $5 cover price – this is a magazine to be looking for.
