2000AD: The Cursed Earth – The “Banned” Judge Dredd Story

.

2000 AD is a British comic book – printed on newsprint – that was published weekly starting in 1977. The series was published by IPC Magazines and featured the first appearance of classic British character Judge Dredd (2000 AD #2). 2000 AD has over 2,000 issues and some of them sell very well on the secondary market. Over the next few days I hope to detail a few of those issues. I’d like to start by detailing the “banned” Judge Dredd Cursed Earth issues that were recently reprinted in the Judge Dredd: The Cursed Earth Uncensored TPB from 2017.

.
The Cursed Earth was a twenty issue Judge Dredd story-line that appeared in 2000 AD. Four of these issues featured copyrighted characters and after a complaint by the company that own the Jolly Green Giant – 2000 AD published an apology letter which stated that they would never reprint these four issues. In 2015 due to a change in copyright law in England these issues were reprinted but the first prints are still sought after online and can sell for a premium.

The first issues within this “Banned” comic saga were 2000 AD #71 and 2000 AD #72 – these books featured the stories “Battle of the Burger Barons” and “Burger Law” where Ronald Macdonald and his restaurant team go to war with the people of Burger King. These two issues have many copyrighted characters – and even though Mcdonalds and Burger King didn’t complain about these issues they were “banned” for further republication.

2000 AD #77 and 2000 AD #78 are the two other issues that include copyrighted characters. These issues included the Jolly Green Giant, Mr. Peanut, The Michelin Man, Colonel Sanders, and more. It was the owners of the Jolly Green Giant that filed the complaint and due to the UK’s strict laws that made it illegal to parody copyrighted characters – all of the issues including any “parody” characters were banned.

All four of these issues sell well online – not just the Jolly Green Giant issues – all though they sell better as a set the stand out issues are 2000 AD #72 and 2000 AD #77. Titan published a HC in 2016 reprinting these four stories uncensored for the first time – while this was later reprinted as a trade paperback – the original hard cover can sell for as much as $90.
