Over the last three weeks all of the Free Comic Book Day titles for 2020 were announced. Free Comic Book Day is an annual event where participating comic book stores order from a list of books and give them away from free on a specific day. This year Free Comic Book Day falls on May 2, 2020 and you can find a full list of the comic books being offered here. This year features the first appearance of an all new Robert Kirkman comic series, Fire-Power #1, as well as the first appearance of an all new Mean Girls movie sequel graphic novel, Mean Girls Senior Year.

This year Marvel Comics has two comics books, a Spider-Man / Venom book and an X-Men #1 that “will lead into a game changing event coming in 2020!” Marvel also announced that they have teamed up with Funko to produce a special “PREVIEWS Exclusive” Mystery Box. This is the first time Marvel has ever offered something like this. The Mystery Box is to contain collectible merchandise including a Marvel Comics Funko Pop! PX Bobble-Head Figure, a special Funko T-Shirt and a special Marvel Funko comic book variant.

Marvel has announced three different mystery boxes to choose from – each themed around one of three Funko Pop Figures. In the original press release posted through Previews and the Free Comic Book Day website – it states that the Funko Pop characters will be announced in Mid-March.

When it comes to the special edition comic books inside of these boxes – they will feature one of the three Pop Funko figure characters on the cover. There will be three variations of each one of these covers and they will be randomly distributed – 65% of the boxes will get the main variant cover – 25% will get a No Logo Variant and 10% will get a special edition Gold Logo Cover. That is nine different variant covers – all being released on May 2, 2020 with the Gold Logo Cover being the rarest.

These special mystery boxes will have a suggested retail price of $34.99 – I wouldn’t be surprised if these were very much in demand upon release. I also wouldn’t be surprised if orders out numbered the amount produced resulting in allocations. Even though full details and images have not been released, this is something you probably want to ask your local comic book store about pre-ordering.
