Spotlight on Cancelled Comic Cavalcade and the “DC Implosion”

.

In 1978 DC comics ended up biting off more than they could chew when their parent company, Warner Brothers, decided to pull the plug and cancel 65 titles – 40% of its current comic book line. This included already completed comic books. This cancellation and the effects it had on the company and the companies public perception were labeled the “DC Implosion of 1978”.

.

So what happened to these unpublished stories? Most of the unpublished material was collected by inter-DC staff member in the summer of 1979 who printed and bound them in limited quantities as the “Cancelled Comic Cavalcade #1 and #2” ashcans. There are rumored to only be 35 original copies of this material – however, because these books were just photocopies of the unpublished artwork there were a lot of bootlegged copies – but even he bootlegged copies, the only copies you’ll probably find in the wild, sell for a considerable amount on the secondary market. With the last sale of a set of photocopied bootlegs selling on December 20, 2019 for just over $100.

There are original copies out there – as you can see below. This copy was made available for sale in March of 2018 on the 30th Century Comics website for 3000 Pounds.

It is my belief that these books are very undervalued as they are a very important part of DC’s comic book history. It is also worth noting that these books are mentioned in various comic book price guides including the Overstreet Price Guide. If you can find copies I think they are well worth grabbing and holding onto.
