Journey into Comic Oddities with Brian Beck

.
When Pop Culture Worlds Collide It’s always good to try and pick up books that cover more than just comic book collector’s, be it movie/TV books or a comic book by or featuring some kind of celebrity. That way you always have at least two different kinds of collecting communities looking for the books you have. Below is a short, and not at all comprehensive, list of books by or featuring musicians. There are tons, and many are next to unknown and can have some good resale value. I focused on “modern-ish” music and musicians. I also tended to pick books that feature bands I personally like that way if it’s not a flip, I still own something I think is pretty dang cool.

Faith No More.jpg

.
Rock and Roll Biography #2: Faith No More/Mr Bungle – This is a fairly scarce comic released by Acme Comics in 2015. Faith No More have recently announced they are reuniting, and both band Faith No More and Mr Bungle have always had a good cult following.

.
Method Man Ashcan
.

Method Man Ashcan – Another pretty scarce book about the Wu-Tang member. Released by Grand Central as a graphic novel eventually, the ashcan is a tough find, and will appeal to hip-hop and comic fans alike. There are many other Wu related books out there, including special edition Wutang CD pamphlet comics, if you look around.

On Ravens Wings Signed #1.jpg

.
On Raven’s Wing #1 – This is a super early and the first comic book work by Gerad Way of My Chemical Romance, who went on the create the hit comic and Netflix show Umbrella Academy. Very hard to find the first (and second) issues.

Orchid #1 .jpg

.
Orchid #1 – Published by Dark Horse comics in 2012 this book is written by Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine. Not a huge value book, but super cool. There’s also a one in five variant by famous artist Shepard Fairey, best known for his Obama Hope posters, that I can’t believe can be picked up for under $5.

Amory Wars.jpeg

.
The Armory Wars: The Second Stage Turbine Blade #1 – Released and sold at Cohhed and Cambria live shows. There are two versions of this book (and two issues in the series) : a self-published first print without a logo, and an almost equally hard to find Evil Ink version with the Evil Ink logo on the cover. Bought at concerts most of these got beat up and are hard to find in high grade.

Secret Path Delux Set

.
The Secret Path – A haunting true story graphic novel by Jeff Lemire and Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip. There’s a deluxe edition that includes the book,a ten song album on vinyl, 10 lyric posters, and custom packaging. The Tragically Hip, though not really appreciated elsewhere, are huge in Canada, and Jeff Lemire keeps putting out interesting stuff, making this a two-for-one. This album was turned into an animated special by the Canadian Broadcast Channel using Jeff Lemire’s artwork from the comic.

The Sun Is Sick – A two issue comic book by Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips. Two beautiful and very hard to find comics, by one of my favorite musicians and people.

.

The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls In America

.

The Hold Steady : Boys and Girls In America – This is a promo comic book from the band The Hold Steady. I love the band have been looking for an affordable copy of this for awhile, without luck. Sigh.

.

Wicked Clownz

.

Upz and Downz of Wicked Clownz #1 – The first comic book from the Insane Clown Posse. Juggalos are a community that just won’t die, and with only 3000 copies printed, this book always sells well.

Backstreet Project #1.jpg

.

Backstreet Project #1 – Stan Lee turns The Backstreet Boys into super heroes. ‘Nuff Said!
