The Maxx coming to the Big Screen

.

Today news came out from The Hollywood Reporter that Channing Tatum and Roy Lee are teaming up to make a movie based on the cult classic Sam Keith comic book series “The Maxx”.
.
This should be great news for the speculative community as there are numerous Maxx books that are going to start seeing a lot of attention. Here are a few of them.
.
The Maxx #1 and Darker Image #1 feature the first appearance of The Maxx character. Both books were published on the same date in March of 1993 and when these books are graded by CGC, they do not designate either as being the first appearance. However, in 2011, Sam Keith posted an image on his website from an old sketchbook where he suggests in the images description that Darker Image is the first appearance of The Maxx character.
.
Both the Maxx #1 and Darker Image #1 have a few variant covers that are worth looking for.
Darker Image #1 had a regular version, a gold foil variant cover as well as a silver foil “Platinum” variant cover. There was also a very low print run ashcan for this issue published by Homage Studios. Most of these issues had a sticker sealing them closed.

The Maxx #1 had quite a few variant covers including special edition ashcan variants. In 1993 Image published numerous ashcans of their most popular titles in various printings and The Maxx was no exception. Image produced ashcan versions of the first three issues with the first issue having four different ashcans, and according to recalledcomics.com the print runs ranged from 4000 to 52. These ashcans are increasingly difficult to find in high grade condition and all of them are signed and numbered. Image also released a special glow in the dark variant cover of the first issue of The Maxx.

One other book to think about is Wizard Magazine #16. This book was distributed in December of 1992 and has a cover featuring The Maxx. This book also had one small preview black and white splash page from the Darker Image comic book by Sam Keith.

One last book that has in recent memory commanded a high price is Primer #5 published in 1982 which features the first appearance of Max the Hare – a character that was created by Sam Keith and appears in Black and White. This character has been regarded as the prototype for The Maxx character.

  • The Maxx already had an MTV show many moons ago – very bizarre but awesome! Not sure is big screen is the right format for this material. This feels more Cartoon Network Adult Swim. As a young teen I absolutely loooooved The Maxx! Sam Keith’s artwork and writing style drove me NUTS! it was just so different from everything else.

  • Wouldn’t Wizard #16 be considered the first cover appearance for the Maxx since it predates everything including Darker Image? In fact, you’ll notice Kieth’s Maxx has the same noodling which he did for Marvel Comic Presents so it’s definitely the first published appearance.
