Over the last few years retailers have tried various promotions to help highlight their new titles. What Dark Horse did in 2006 is rather remarkable.

In 2006 Dark Horse launched a contest for retailers where they could enter to win copies of an exclusive comic book variant that was limited to 1000 copies. The variants were called “Dark Horse 100 variants”. Dark Horse would pick ten retailers to receive 100 copies each – all for free. The first variant cover distributed through this promotion was for Star Wars Dark Times #1. The last sale online of this variant was in August 2019 – when a copy described as being in Very Good condition sold for $100. To say these variant covers are desirable would be an understatement.

Recently I picked up a Star Wars Dark Times #1 Dark Horse 100 variant without knowing what it was. It was when I was looking into its value that I learned more about these variants, which started me thinking about how many different ones there could possibly be. Join me as I list a few of the other Dark Horse 100 variants.

After the success of the Star Wars Dark Times #1 variant, Dark Horse announced the next limited to 1000 variant cover, a Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Eight #1 variant cover – which featured a sketch cover by Georges Jeanty. It was around this time that Dark Horse decided to share the love and instead of giving 10 retailers 100 copies they chose 100 retailers to give 10 copies to.
This book sells for north of $100+ in raw near mint condition.

The same year as Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight #1 – Dark Horse released another limited to 1000 variant as part of the Dark Horse 100 contest / program – this time for Gerard Way’s The Umbrella Academy #1. Based on the success of the Netflix Umbrella Academy TV series, this book has been hailed as THE key Umbrella Academy book as it features first appearances and is the lowest print run book in the series. It has been known to sell for north of $400.

The next Dark Horse 100 Special Edition variant cover I can find information on is Hellboy Wild Hunt #1 from 2008. I can’t find any recent sales for this book.

Another 2008 variant was for the Conan the Barbarian book, Conan the Cimmerian #1. This book featured a black and white sketch cover.

After Hellboy and Conan came Goon. Dark Horse released the Goon #32 in 2009. The Dark Horse 100 variant is a black and white variant of the regular cover. This is another book that sells for around $100 in raw near mint condition.

After the Goon there was a Dark Horse 100 variant for the first issue of the 2009 Predator series.

The next variant was for Usagi Yojimbo Volume 3 #123.
