Marvel seems to be gearing up for their 2020 releases these last few days. Today Marvel released a press release about a new minis-series coming out in February of 2020 titled X-Men / Fantastic Four #1. This four part mini-series is written by Chip Zdarsky and features artwork by Terry and Rachel Dodson.

Front and center on the released cover is Franklin Richards, a character who has been growing in interest the past few months as indicated in Nico’s Weekend Update and on the Comic Book Wars podcast. This new series is slated to be based around Franklin Richards, establishing where he fits into the current Marvel Universe. Franklin Richards is the son of Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) and Susan Richards (The Invisible Woman) and was called “The most powerful Mutant in the Marvel Universe” by Galactus in last months History of the Marvel Universe #3. It looks like Marvel is trying to build a future for Franklin Richards which means now is a great time to be picking up copies of his first appearance.

While there have been different versions of Franklin Richards introduced in the Marvel Universe at various times I think its best to just focus on the characters very first appearance. Franklin Richards first appeared in Fantastic Four Annual #6 from 1968 – this book also features the first appearance of Annihilus.

According to GPA, over the past three years CGC graded copies of Fantastic Four Annual #6 have tripled. While there hasn’t been a recorded sale of a CGC 9.8 copy since 2016 – CGC 9.2 Copies went from selling on average for $527 in 2016 to $1395 in 2019. CGC 9.4 copies have gone from $686 to $2404. While this book already seems to be on fire this new mini-series could help rocket this book in value based on how Marvel uses the character – and based on the stepping stones placed by Marvel I don’t see this book slowing down anytime soon.

  • I might do a spotlight on Franklin Richards soon. I’m fascinated with Marvel’s group of Beyond Omega characters – the ones who can affect the universe and in some cases, the Multiverse. The ones I can think of are Franklin, Matthew Malloy, Marquis of Death, Proteus, Phoenix maybe?
