Marvel’s New Man-Thing – Man-Slaughter

Before Diamond solicitation’s go live for the next two months of books, diamond solicitations being the list of books stores order to have available for sale, Marvel announced a new one-shot to be released in January that looks very interesting – Weapon Plus: World War IV #1.

This is a one-shot written by Benjamin Percy and featuring artwork by Georges Jeanty. So far the only thing released for this series has been cover artwork (by Kyle Hotz) and a general synopsis of the story.

“Biochemist Ted Sallis was developing a serum for military application, but was tragically killed in a freak accident before he could perfect it. Still, the data behind his formula remains property of the United States government and the Weapon IV Program to this day–Mutants aren’t the only ones to have weaponized flora!
Marvel Comics proudly presents a sensational new hero ready to fight back against the new world order! No longer just a man…not a thing…he’s All-American soil and he’s reporting for duty…”

Ted Sallis is the original Man-Thing – first appearing in Savage Tales #1 from 1971. The Man-Thing is Marvel’s Swamp Thing and while he did show up first he isn’t nearly as popular as the DC character. While Swamp Thing and Man-Thing have similar appearances and both have ‘Thing’ in their names, they both have very different origin stories. Here is an excerpt from What if #26 where the Watcher explains his origin.

When compared to Swamp Thing, the Super-serum origin story in my mind makes the Man-Thing character a much more interesting character. This synopsis for Weapon Plus: World War IV #1 suggests that Marvel is introducing an all-new character using the same formula that made the Ted Sallis Man-Thing. This story was first run as an exclusive story by the website Xavier Files – who added that this new Man-Thing character is named Man-Slaughter. There is no indication that this is Manslaughter Mardale, the spider-man villain, the only other character in the Marvel comic universe with the Manslaughter name.

It looks like this new one-shot is going to feature the first appearance of this new character and based on that I think it’s a good book to be thinking about pre-ordering. Most of Marvel Comic first appearances are flash-in-the-pan speculation, however, most of the titles sell well on the first two weeks of release.

Weapon Plus: World War IV #1 had a tentative release date of January 2020.

That’s all for now!

I see almost zero potential in this book. It’s a bad remake of a character that’s not popular to begin with. The image of plant guns is ridiculous as well. I’ll pass on this. The only thing going for it is it will have a tiny print run because I have a strong feeling it won’t be ordered in numbers. Unless it’s included in a movie or tv it’s a dud. Considering Swamp Thing was canceled and was getting rave reviews and solid numbers I doubt we’ll see a Man Thing Series. Unless it’s porn titled Giant Man Thing.
Not new, a hybrid. Same thing is happening in January with the Hulk/Spider-man character
Hulk Spider-Man already happened though.
I agree with @Todd; no spec value at all. The palnt gun thing is laughable. Easy pass. ‘Giant Man Thing’. That was funny.
