“BONE has been published in over 30 countries since 1991, with over 9 million copies in print in North America alone. It is among TIME Magazine’s “Ten Best Graphic Novels of All Time” and winner of more than 40 national and international publishing awards, including the Eisner Awards, Harvey Awards, and The French Alph Art. BONE was a pioneer in comics publishing for kids as the launch title for Scholastic’s graphic novel imprint, Graphix Books, when it debuted in 2005.

“I’ve waited a long time for this,” says Smith, creator of the BONE graphic novels. “Netflix is the perfect home for BONE. Fans of the books know that the story develops chapter by chapter and book by book. An animated series is exactly the way to do this! The team at Netflix understands BONE and is committed to doing something special – this is good news for kids and cartoon lovers all over the world.”

The Bone comic book is one of the largest distributed graphic novels – being sold by Scholastic’s and being available in many school libraries. Before any media optioning news was on the table the key Bone books already had high collectibility.

Bone #1, published by Cartoon books in 1991, has been a key book in the modern comic collecting community for some time. A CGC 9.8 copy sold in December of 2018 for $4000 and a CGC 9.6 copy sold for $2000 in August of 2019. Bone #1 first printing is hard to find and very sought after. While Bone #1 has multiple printings it isn’t the real first appearance of Bone.

When Jeff Smith attended Ohio State University he contributed to the school newspaper “The Lantern” by submitting a cartoon strip. This cartoon strip was titled Thorn and features comic characters that have striking resemblances to characters in the Bone Universe. The characters in this strip are regarded as early versions of the characters that appeared in the Bone Graphic Novel series.

Most of these Bone keys are already unobtainable, but this is the biggest news to hit the comic scene in a few months! A successful Bone animated series has the potential to be Netflix’s biggest hit as of yet.

That’s all for now. Thanks to Nico and Sleepy Jawn for your help with this.

  • I bought a 1st print Bone #3 signed by Jeff Smith for $30 on eBay last year, sent it to CBCS, came back 9.8 and certified signature and sold it for $300. People shouldn’t underestimate the usefulness of a CBCS certified Signature.
