Tom Hanks as Major Matt Mason
Space
There was one movie announcement last month that seems to have flown under the radar. Last month Variety reported that Tom Hanks was set to star in a Mattel / Paramount movie adaptation of Major Matt Mason.

Major Matt Mason was an action figure created and sold by Mattel toys first introduced in 1966. Major Matt Mason was an astronaut who worked and lived on the moon. With Tom Hanks signed on to play the title character, now is a great time to start looking at the Major Matt Mason characters appearances in different mediums.

DC ran an advertisement for the Major Matt Mason toys in various titles in 1967. The below house advertisement ran in Flash #175 and Superman’s Girlfriend Lois Land #77 among others.

While some websites are reporting this as a first appearance of the character – This is just a one-page advertisement so I don’t think it counts as an appearance. Major Matt Mason made an appearance in a book published by Whitman and Western Publishing in 1968 – Big Little Book #2020 featured the Major Matt Mason Moon Mission story. This is the first time a full length story featuring the character was published. Big Little Book #2020 is a small sized 250+ book that features mostly written text and illustrated images with text on every other page.

I’m not sure if this movie will ever get made or if we’re going to end up seeing Tom Hanks in the title role – but I do know that the first appearance, Big Little Book #2020 is very undervalued right now. Big Little Book #2020 currently sells for $15 to $20. There is no stopping this book if more news comes out about this project and its progression.

There are also very rare Major Matt Mason coloring books that were published by Whitman in 1968. This sells for $25 to $50 depending on its condition.

That’s all for now.

Lois Lane has an advert yes but it is a sequential art story, here you have a picture book. Though cool it is not a first comic appearance.
I disagree but that’s why I put both all three books up.
