Ed Brubaker Creator Owned Series in Development with Legendary TV Studios
Earlier today news dropped that Legendary Television Studios had struck a deal with comic writer, Ed Brubaker, to collaborate and adapt some of his creator owned properties. Similar to the Millarworld / Netflix acquisition, Brubaker is going to develop new content for Legendary as well as adapt some of his already established creator owned properties.
Ed Brubaker has a very long career in comic books working for DC, Marvel Comics and a few independent companies – however, he doesn’t have a lot of creator owned series. I thought now would be a great time to look at his creator owned comic series.
Criminal was first published in 2006 by Icon Comics – The first volume is 10 issues and the second is 7 -these were reprinted by Image Comics. The only book you should be looking for within this series is Criminal #1 from Icon Comics. There is only one printing of the first issue and like most of Brubakers creator owned series there are no variant covers.
Incognito was published in 2008. This was a six issue limited series published by Marvel’s creator owned imprint, Icon. This title was first optioned by Fox in 2010 and apparently was active at Sony as of 2016. Since there havn’t been any new developments since 2016, one would have to assume Incognito is part of the Legendary TV deal. The first issue of this series has two covers.
Brubaker had four comic series from Image Comics that fall under his creator owned umbrella -The first is Fatale. Upon its release the first issue of Fatale grew in popularity. Published in 2012, there are two covers for this book and in 2012 / 2013 CGC 9.8 copies of the first issue would average $100 to $120 – they current GPA 12 month average is $57.
Kill or Be Killed was released in 2016 and within 12 months news came out that Chad Stahelski, co-director of John Wick, would be bringing Kill or Be killed to the big screen. There have been no public developments from this project since 2017 so like Incognito – I would have to assume this project is dead.
The other two series from Image Comics are Velvet (2013) and The Fade Out (2014).
Those are the books I think you should be looking for! Let me know in the comments (or on social media) if I missed any books you think are spec worthy!
