  • Captain Marvel#18 doesn’t feature Carol in costume, but it is considered her “origin story”, as her rescue by Mar-vell in this issue results in the power transfer that gives her Kree-based superhuman abilities. Ms. Marvel#1-5 continually reference this issue when explaining how the costumed alter-ego of Ms. Marvel came into existence. When Carol first started super-heroing, the Ms. Marvel identity actually functioned like a split personality, where Carol wasn’t even aware that she was Ms. Marvel.

Another interesting situation with Ms. Marvel is that her powers were permanently stripped by Rogue in Avengers Annual#10, and only her Memories were restored by Professor X. Brian Reed had some interesting stories in his mid-2000’s Ms. Marvel run dealing with the fact that Carol had these memories returned to her so that she could see & know them, but had no Feeling attached to them as she didn’t actually Experience them. But that’s a tangent; I’m just a huge Carol Danvers fan & So Excited this movie is happening!! Anyhow, what I was trying to get to is that her original abilities were taken away, and she was powerless until Uncanny X-men#164, where she was experimented on by The Brood and transformed into Binary. After spending a decade as Binary, it is a variation of those abilities that are her current powerset as Ms. Marvel / Captain Marvel. I know Marvel can’t use The Brood, and even though Deathbird (originally an ally of The Brood) first appeared in Ms. Marvel she’s probably roped into the X-franchise like Mystique, but if they are planning to avoid Mar-vell entirely, they may use alien experimentation as the explanation for her powers, which would tie-into Uncanny X-men#164. But who knows if anyone will care enough about that story to seek it out.
