Brian Beck’s Obscure Comic Picks: Hard to find Comics Based on Horror Movies

I am, and always have been a huge horror movie fan. For me, my love of comic books started around the same time, and went hand in hand with with my love of horror. I’m not alone. Horror movie comic’s are one of the most consistent genre that sell for me, while holding or increasing in price. Lots of us love the dark side. Here is a short list of just some of the comic books based on horror movies that sell well on the comic book aftermarket.

Creepshow #1 – This was one of the very first horror/comic crossovers that grabbed my attention as a kid. It was recently relaunched as a show on Shudder with an issue #0 available at the 2019 San Diego Comic Con. The original first print keeps gaining value, and always sells quick. Be careful you get a first print, and not the Plume Book Club Edition. They look the same except the indica.

The Devil’s Rejects #1 – Rob Zombie’s cult film was released as a one-shot comic book by IDW. It sells well, and is fairly tough to find. There was also a special edition DVD set variant edition, although in smaller “ashcan” form. There are also 3 character-focused (Otis, Baby, Spaulding) convention variants for this series that seems to be tough to find, especially the “Baby” variant.

Full Moon Presents The Deadly Ten #1 – Full Moon is responsible for many classic cult horror movies, and they have their own comic line available through their website. The Deadly Ten all have Dan Mendoza (of Zombie Tramp) doing regular and risque variants limited to 250 copies each.

The Howling : Revenge of The Werewolf Queen #1 – All of the horror comics from Space Goat Productions have very low print runs, and the company is now defunct so these titles will unlikely be reprinted. The Howling #1 has a cool 1:20 Bill Sienkiewicz variant, which is likely one of the lower print Bill S variants.

The New Adventures of The Toxic Avenger #1 – Released by the Troma comics line in 2000 (they have other tough to find books based on their films) these books have very low print runs. I’ve seen people ask $100 plus for the regular blue cover but there’s an even harder to find Cannes Film Festival variant that is next to impossible to find.

The Humanoids #1 – This comic series was a direct sequel to the movie Humanoids From The Deep, and the series had a very low print run. I’ve sold these several times above $40 in higher grade raw condition.

The Willies #1 – I love this horror movie and have been hunting for an affordable copy of the comic book tie-in for years. I occasionally see one on eBay for $100+, but I believe that’s the only copy I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure if it was released normally or as some kind of special promotional book, but I know it’s insanely difficult to find.

Trick R Treat. – This long out of print graphic novel published by DC Comic’s Wildstorm imprint sells very well on the secondary Market selling for $90 to $100. There was also a special edition San Diego Comic Con Ashcan preview of this graphic novel that sells for about $80.

Zombie #1 – Based on the Lucio Fulci film these horror movie comics published by Eibon Press are beautiful and made with lots of fan love and care. Many have limited print runs, and “Psycho Fan Editions” which sells out quickly. These books were not available via Diamond, but some of the best horror comics out there right now.

The Warriors – The comic based on the movie sells very well. The Dabel brothers first published these in 2009 (with some rare #1 variants), then it went on to Dynamite. My favorite cover is the Baseball Furries on issue #3 featuring artwork by Eric Powell, but pretty much every issue sells for $15+, with some having sold over $100 an issue.
