Week in Review: January 1, 2020

.

Hello and welcome to the week in review on Comicbookspeculation.com – home of the original week in review – where we go over all of the hot books being released to comic book stores this week. Here are just some books that come out this week that I think are interesting.

.
Its the first new comic book day of the year and almost every comic book store in North America is going to be closed – that’s why Diamond sent most of the comic books to stores a few days earlier and most stores will have them available for sale on January 2. This book doesn’t have a lot of new releases but it does have a few Marvel one per store variants that have already started selling online.

This week sees the release of another Star Wars relaunch comic book series. This is the second Marvel Star wars series. This book has a special Phil Noto “party variant” – and any stores that ordered copies of this cover received one copy of this one per store black and white sketch variant. This book also has a two per store “premiere variant” cover. Last week saw the release of Star Wars Kylo Ren #1 a new series based around Han Solo’s bad boy son. The regular cover of the Kylo Ren first issue has started selling for around $10 to $15 – this is a great indication that people are buying up these Star Wars books. I would just be careful holding onto them for too long – you can just look up the prices of the high ratio covers for the first Marvel Star Wars series – most of the 1 in 10, 1 in 25 and 1 in 50 variant covers for issues from the first volume sell for under $10.

Another one per store variant cover Marvel is releasing this week is for Donny Cates new Thor #1. This book was sent out to retailers before final order cut off – which is how the plot of the book leaked online. This book features Thor becoming a herald of Galactus – something that first happened in the Robert Kirkman penned What if Thor #1 from 2005. The “party variant” cover, featuring artwork by Nic Klein, is going to be the lowest print cover for this series, offered as a one per store cover for any stores that ordered copies of the regular party variant. While there is both 1 in 200 and 1 in 500 variant covers there are so many covers for this issue that the print runs for all of the ratio covers will be relatively high. This party variant is currently selling for around $30 online and is a great book to be picking up considering Donny Cates favorability with readers.

One book that comes out this week that I like the look of is the one in ten variant cover for the new Ducktales series. Ducktales Faires and Scares #1 is the first issue of the new IDW Ducktales series. The last Ducktales series by IDW had one in ten variants were most of the early issues that were jumped on by readers and speculators alike. These books sold well upon release but have since cooled off quite a bit – with the first issue variant of the series being the stand out issue. I think this new book has the potential of repeating the success of the variants from the first series.

Another variant that I like that comes out this week is the 1 in 50 variant cover for Tarot #1. This is a new four part series published by Marvel Comics. This variant cover by David Nakayama features the Scarlet Witch in an infinity cover. This beautiful cover has one or two sales online – one of which was for $80. Since this is a $4.99 cover priced book and its been solicited as a mini-series I can’t see too many stores qualifying for this particular variant.

  • Kylo Ren was the REAL star of the new SW trilogy! Although his character kinda retcons the original Star Wars EU – where does this leave Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin Solo?? Still, more of Kylo is a good thing!
