The First appearance of the Power Rangers (In Comics) Revisted

.

Over the past two months two copies of the almost impossible to find first appearance of the Power Rangers in comic books have reemerged from comic book collections. I think now is a great time to revisit this very underappreciated book. We’ve written about this book extensively and even made a video about it at one point. You can read our write about from last year here.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (MMPR) debuted on American television on August 28, 1993 and it was immediately a rating success. The MMPR were created by Haim Saban who up to that point was best known for composing intro music for Sunday Morning Cartoons most notably Inspector Gadget. For The MMPR Saban’s idea was to reedit scenes of the hit Japanese TV series Super Sentai with scenes shot with American actors as a way to introduce the Super Sentai Japanese toy line to American children.

The MMPR quickly became a merchandising goldmine and soon after the television debut of the Power Ranger TV series, Fruit of the Loom started to release Power Rangers branded merchandise. They released children’s underwear and T-shirts. At one point Fruit of the Loom offered a promotional comic book with the purchase of these items. And its this book, published by Harris Comics, that is considered the first appearance of the Power Rangers. This book is so rare that as of December 2019 CGC hasn’t graded single copy. This past November a copy sold on ebay for $10.

And recently Richie Bobich posted on Facebook marketplace the copy he recently found with his childhood Power Ranger trading cards. This book is regarded by CGC as the first appearance of The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers – if sales of the recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle / MMPR series is an indication of anything its that the nostalgia for the Power Rangers is alive and well making this a book you should be putting on your radar.
