In 2015 it was first announced the Jeff Lemires Graphic Novel, Essex County, was being developed into a television series for the Canadian Broadcast Channel (The CBC). Well last week I spoke to Jeff and from our conversation I learned a few things.

Currently Lemire has over 10 comic properties optioned and in development for some kind of Hollywood treatment – these include Black Hammer, Sweet Tooth and Gideon Falls. One of his properties, Descender, was optioned on its release by Sony Pictures but the option has since expired and Lemire’s team has been shopping the property around. I also inquired about Royal City to be told that while all offers have been turned down, there are a few interested parties who have inquired about buying the optioning rights.

While the planned Essex County series will be a one season mini-series with about eight episode – all of them will be scripted by Lemire. While I think the CBC’s involvement hampers the project, Lemires direct involvement gives me hope that this series could revitalize interest in the Essex County book. When Publishers Weekly wrote about the series they described it as “interlinked stories about a farming family and uses hockey as a metaphor for unfulfilled promise.”

Essex County was originally published as three 112 page paperback graphic novels that were later collected and published as the Essex County Graphic Novel by Top Shelf Productions. The first book in the series was published in March of 2007 and was titled “Essex County: Volume 1: Tales from the Farm.”

I have found it increasingly difficult to find high grade copies of the 2007 publication of this book. I have yet to find a copy that doesn’t turn out to have previously been owned by a Library with Library stamps and all. I think its a great idea to try to pick up and secure copies of  the first appearance of Essex County, Volume 1: Tales from the Farm, before more information comes out about the television series.
