This Week in Hellboy: New Origins?
Space
This last week there has been a lot of talk about Hellboy and his origins. This started last week when Bleedingcool ran an article titled “Mike Mignola’s First Hellboy from 1991 Sells for $5000 on ebay”. This book isn’t Dime Press #4 the long established first appearance of Hellboy published in 1993 – rather its the Great Salt Lake Comic Convention 1991 Pamphlet.

This isn’t new news – this is more people realizing a books importance after a large sale. There are plenty of threads on the CGC forums and numerous other comic book forums that indicate this book’s importance as the first appearance of Hellboy. Here is a website post from 2011 about the “secret origins of Hellboy.” This Convention Pamphlet features an article and one picture of the Hellboy character.

I don’t believe this book is gradedable by any of the comic book grading companies, however, there have been a few sales over the years – with the most recent being on ebay for $5000. The best part about this news is that the Great Salt Lake Comic Convention 1991 Pamphlet isn’t the only new first appearance for Hellboy to hit the internet this week.

Historically the key Hellboy Books have been –
Great Lake Comic Convention 1991 Pamphlet – The first appearance of Hellboy
Dime Press #4 (May 1993) – The First cover Appearance of Hellboy
San Diego Comic Con Comics #2 (August 1993) – The First appearance of Hellboy in a Story
John Brynes Next Men #21 (December 1993) – The First Color Appearance of Hellboy

This week Key Collector and Topher S pointed out that there is a color Hellboy appearance that predates John Bryne’s Next Men #21 by a few months. In John Bryne’s Next Men #14 from 1993 Hellboy appears in a poster in the background of a panel.

While this is a nonsubstantial throw away appearance, this is still an appearance. Since it was highlighted by Key Collector this book has sold for as much as $50! It is currently selling for $30 to $40 which is big news considering this book is regularly found in dollar bins! Right now we should be in a Hellboy lull considering how poorly received the last film was – but these large sales and interest in Hellboy books shows that even without media speculation Hellboy is a strong comic book property.

That’s all for now!

The more I see it the more Next Men #14 is pretty iffy to me. The image barely looks like Hellboy and the poster doesn’t even completely spell his name out in full but I suppose it is an appearance. It sure won’t be a dollar bin book anymore but I feel sorry for whoever was buying these at $50.
