Who is the New Batwoman Beyond?

We first alerted our readers to the new Batwoman Beyond character at the beginning of the month in our spotlight article on Batman Beyond #37. In That article we suggested that this could be a new character taking on the Batman Beyond role or it could be an older character being reintroduced as this new character. Originally we specualted that this character could be Maxine Gibson. Well I am afraid to say that this character isn’t Maxine Gibson and it isn’t a new character.

Some comic book stores received their shipments for this weeks books today and the reveal of the new Batwoman Beyond has already leaked online. On the last page of the new Batman Beyond #37 issue we don’t get a confirmation of who this character is but we find out that there are two possibilities of who is wearing this new female Batman Beyond costume. It is either Barbara Gordon or Melanie Walker.

I think its more likely to be Melanie Walker over Barbara Gordon because I think Barbara is an overused character in the DC universe.

Melanie Walker is a character that was first introduced in the animated Batman Beyond television series who was later introduced into the comic book universe. Melanie Walker’s first appearance in the DC comic universe is in Batman Beyond Volume 2 #4 from 2000 where she appeared as her alias Ten of Spades.

Batman Beyond Volume 2 #4 is a great book to be looking for. If this new Batwoman Beyond character does turn out to be her – her first appearance is only going to go up. Its also worth mentioning that Batman Beyond #37 is already heating up online as indicated in our Week in Review article for October 23!
