Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men #1 and the reintroduction of old characters

Space

This week saw the release of Jonathan Hickman’s highly anticipated X-Men #1. In this book Hickman has reintroduced more characters from X-Men past. In this issue Cyclops leads the X-Men with Magneto on a mission to liberate mutants that are being held inside an experimental laboratory. While there they discover a character who isn’t a mutant but isn’t human either – a member of the “Children of the Vault”.

The Children of the Vault are supervillains who were first introduced in 2006. The character who we see in this week’s X-Men #1 isn’t named but Comicbook.com is reporting that they think it is Serafina who is described as “a technopath and capable tracker“. It is worth noting that The previous incarnations of this character did not have the black negative art appearance.

The Children of the Vault and Serafine first appear in X-Men Volume 2 #188 from 2006. This book has two covers a regular cover and a 1 in 25 sketch variant cover. Both of these books are relatively inexpensive but based on how the comic market has been reacting to the new characters in Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men universe I wouldn’t expect this book to stay cheap for very long.

I think this book has the very high likelihood of being the next “First Goldballs” – a book that saw an initial spike of interest only to have since dwindled out.
