Hollywood Daze: HBO’s Watchmen and DC’s Doomsday Clock

HBO and series producer Damon Lindelof showed the first episode of the new Watchmen series at last weekend’s New York Comic Con. The first episode has been well received by comic review websites and friend of the site Blind Adam said he enjoyed watching it. What we found out from the various reviews is that the new series isn’t an adaptation of the original Watchmen graphic novel but rather a continuation of the original story.

Thrillist, a pop culture website, has a Watchmen article from July that they keep adding information to. In this article it details all of the actors and the characters they are playing. The last line says “Also joining the cast is Tom Mison (Sleepy Hollow) as Mime and Sarah Vickers (Endeavour) as Marionette.” This was also reported by the Key Collector App.

This is important news as these characters first appear in DC’s Doomsday Clock series. This news could be an indication that the Watchmen series will be an adaptation of the Doomsday Clock series – it could also explain a few of the publishing delays with the later issues of the 12 part series.

Mime and Marionette first appear is Doomsday Clock #1. The first issue has four regular covers including a special Midnight release variant. Doomsday Clock had an earlier preview ashcan that was given to retailers at New York Comic Con that predates the first issue.

There was also a very limited Doomsday Clock promo kit that was sent to members of the press and select retailers. This promo kit included a special edition branded box, a Doomsday Clock #1 comic book, and a Doomsday Clock branded bottle of Pancake Mix and Maple Syrup.

Like the original characters from the Watchmen series, Mime and Marionette are based on earlier characters from the DC / Charlton universe. These two characters are based on Punch and Jewelee – who first appeared in Captain Atom #85.

Its very possible we’re going to start seeing more characters appearing in the Watchmen HBO series from the Doomsday Clock storyline. The First episode of HBO’s Watchmen premiers on October 20, 2019.

That’s all for now.

Wow, interesting. Mime and Marionette are awesome characters in Doomsday Clock; a series that would have been much better received if not for the delays.
I’m suddenly really curious about the HBO series.
